Adorable Needle Felted Pumpkin Tutorial – Learn How to Make It!

September 7, 2024

Autumn is in the air, and I can’t help but embrace the cozy vibes that come with it. One of my favorite needle felting projects during this season is creating adorable felted pumpkins. I love using Corriedale wool, particularly my favorite shade of green, Tadpole. Today, I’m excited to share my method for felting pumpkins using a pipe cleaner as the base, giving it a sturdy and defined shape.

You can watch the video tutorial down below, but I’ve also written out the steps for those who prefer following along at their own pace.

Step-by-Step Pumpkin Felting

  • Step 1: Start with a 15 cm pipe cleaner. Or what ever size you want. Shape it into a circle with a stem extending from one end.

  • Step 2: Using carded Corriedale wool in the colour Bode (or a green to your choice), wrap the wool around the stem of the pumpkin. Begin with a small piece of wool, place it against the pipe cleaner, and wrap it tightly. Ensure the layers are even and secure by felting it onto the wire with your needle.

  • Step 3: Now wrap the carded orange Corriedale wool around the circular part of the frame. Felt the inner part thoroughly to create a flattened pumpkin shape.

  • Step 4: Add more orange wool to both flattened sides of the pumpkin, gradually building it into a rounder shape.

  • Step 5: Push the stem slightly downward, and felt the surrounding wool inward. Add green wool around the base of the stem to create a crown.

  • Step 6: Twist a small rope of orange wool between your fingers, then attach it to the top of the pumpkin. Hold it in place, pull it down through the pumpkin, and secure it at the bottom. Repeat this until you achieve the familiar pumpkin ridges.

  • Step 7: Finally, add the eyes! I like to use 3 mm beads for a playful touch. Secure them with black thread, pulling the thread through the felt so the beads sink slightly into the pumpkin for a cuter look.

Every artist has their own way of creating, and as you become more experienced with needle felting, you’ll find your unique methods for shaping and detailing. Enjoy the process and let your creativity flow! Watch the video:
