Needle Felting for Beginners: How to Make a Festive Red Balloon đ
You might have seen it already: the adorable little mouse with a red balloon has become a big hit on Instagram! This tiny felted character is stealing hearts and fits perfectly with the Sunny the Mouse starter kit. But what if you donât just want to make the mouse, but also its cheerful balloon?
Good news! In this blog, Iâll show you step by step how to needle felt a festive red balloon. Itâs the perfect addition to your little mouse and a great way to improve your felting technique. So grab your felting needle and wool, and letâs get started!
Step 1: Creating the Balloonâs Base
To keep your felted balloon sturdy and well-shaped, weâll use a piece of strong wire, such as floral wire or an unfolded paperclip. This will form both the string and the base of the balloon.
- Take a straight piece of wire, approximately 6â8 cm (2.5â3 inches) long.
- Bend one end into a small round loopâthis will be the core of the balloon.
- Leave the rest of the wire straightâthis will be the string the balloon âfloatsâ on.
- Twist the end of the loop around itself to secure it.
Â
Step 2: Building Up the Balloon with Wool
For a smooth, even finish, use carded Corriedale wool in red (or any color of your choice). Avoid Merino wool, as it is harder to felt and often leaves visible holes.
âď¸ How to wrap the wool around the base:
- Take a long strip of wool and tie it securely around the round loop at the top of the wire.
- Wrap the loose ends fully around the loop so the wire is no longer visible.
- Use your felting needle to gently secure the wool in place. Work layer by layer, making sure the wool is evenly distributed.
- Continue felting until the balloon is firm, about as solid as a soft tennis ball.
đĄ Extra tip: Work in thin layers to prevent loose fibers and uneven bumps.

Step 3: Creating the Balloonâs Neck
Now, weâll felt the balloonâs neckâthe small part where you would normally tie a knot. This detail makes the balloon look even more realistic.
1. Preparing the wool for the neck
- Lay a piece of wool flat on your felting mat with the fibers running horizontally (the direction in which the wool is combed).
- Place a thin strip of wool vertically in the middle.
- Lightly needle felt the wool to bind the fibers together. Make sure it doesnât get stuck to your matâlift it regularly!
2. Shaping the neck
- Fold the horizontal wool over the vertical strip, creating a clean folded edge on one side, while the other remains slightly fluffy.
- Felt this piece flat, but keep the fluffy end looseâthis will help us attach it to the balloon.
3. Attaching it to the balloon
- Wrap the finished edge around the straight part of the wire, just below the balloon.
- The fluffy side should overlap the base of the balloon.
- Make sure the loop stays slightly open, resembling a real balloonâs neck.
- Felt the fluffy fibers into the balloon to secure it.
đĄ Final details: Where the knot would usually be, felt it in a bit more so that the balloon remains round while the neck sticks out slightly.

Step 4 (Optional): Adding a String
Want to make your balloon look even more realistic? Add a little string to complete the look!
- Use a thin thread, such as embroidery floss, cotton string, or thin felted wool.
- Tie it gently around the balloonâs neck, where the knot would normally be.
