Needle Felt a Cactus – No Green Thumb Required!

Do you, like me, have no green thumb but still want a plant to chat with? Then this is your perfect needle felt project! Making a needle felt cactus is not only an adorable and simple project but also ideal for beginners. Needle felting is a relaxing hobby, and with a needle felt cactus, you’ll bring a touch of nature indoors that never needs watering. In this blog, I’ll guide you step by step through the process and share tips for creating a lifelike needle felt cactus!

What You'll Need and How to Create Your Mini Needle Felt Cactus

First, I'll show you what you need to create this mini cactus and then guide you step by step through the process. If you’ve never tried needle felting before and aren’t sure where to start, this is a fun little project for you. It’s also a great option for kids around the age of 10 and up!

Materials Needed for Your Mini Needle Felt Cactus

  1. Pipe cleaners
  2. Carded Corriedale wool in Bode and Bear colors
  3. Eyes (3mm)
  4. A small terracotta pot

 Step-by-Step Guide to Creating Your Needle Felt Cactus

 Step 1 

Bend the First Pipe Cleaner: Bend the first pipe cleaner in half. Twist the bottom together and keep the top rounded.

Step 2

Add the Second Pipe Cleaner: Place the second pipe cleaner flat under the first one. Wrap the pipe cleaner around the inside in one direction. Do the same for the other side. You now have two arms.

Wrap the Base with Brown Wool: Wrap brown wool around the base of the pipe cleaners. Add small amounts of wool and needle felt it in place until you achieve a shape resembling a small pot. Check frequently to ensure that your cactus stands
upright in the pot.

Wrap the Arms with Green Wool: Take a strand of green wool and hold it like a ribbon. Wrap it around the arms. After wrapping, you can add a thin layer of glue over the arms to secure the wool.

Step 5 

Wrap the Body of the Cactus: Wrap the green wool tightly and flat around the pipe cleaners. Needle felt it completely flat. Roll a strip of green wool and attach it to both sides of the cactus, felting it in place to form a tube shape. Wrap another layer of thin wool around the cactus for a smooth finish.

Step 6 

Attach the Eyes and Smile: Sew on the eyes and add a small smile below them.
